Oscars 2017: Best Film Editing

Recommended Posts

The American Cinema Editors have announced their nominees for the Eddie Awards:

BEST EDITED FEATURE FILM (DRAMATIC):

Arrival
Hacksaw Ridge
Hell or High Water
Manchester by the Sea
Moonlight

BEST EDITED FEATURE FILM (COMEDY):

Deadpool
Hail, Caesar!
The Jungle Book
La La Land
The Lobster

The winners will be announced January 27.

Given that exceedingly few films have won the Oscar for Best Picture without being at least nominated for the Oscar for Best Film Editing, conventional thinking might suggest that a film that hasn't been nominated for the Eddie might not go on to win Best Picture. But last year the Eddies snubbed Spotlight, and it went on to be nominated for the Oscar for Best Film Editing, and it then went on to win Best Picture (though not Best Film Editing). For whatever that's worth.

The nominees for the Oscar are (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • Arrival
  • Hacksaw Ridge
  • Hell or High Water
  • La La Land
  • Moonlight

So, four of the dramatic Eddie nominees, plus one of the comedy Eddie nominees.

And the winners are... Arrival and La La Land, both of which were nominated for the Oscar.
