Oscars 2017: Best Screenplay (Original)

Recommended Posts

The Writers Guild Award nominees:

  • Hell or High Water, Written by Taylor Sheridan; CBS Films
  • La La Land, Written by Damien Chazelle; Lionsgate
  • Loving, Written by Jeff Nichols; Focus Features
  • Manchester by the Sea, Written by Kenneth Lonergan; Amazon Studios/Roadside Attractions
  • Moonlight, Written by Barry Jenkins, Story by Tarell McCraney; A24

I believe this guild only nominates its own members, so there are a lot of Oscar-contending scripts that weren't even considered for the WGA award.

The winner will be announced February 19.

The nominees for the Oscar are (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • Hell or High Water
  • La La Land
  • The Lobster
  • Manchester by the Sea
  • 20th Century Women

So, basically, three of the WGA nominees, with The Lobster and 20th Century Women taking the spots that the WGA gave to Loving and Moonlight. (Though the Oscars did nominate Moonlight in the "adapted" category.)

And the winner is... Moonlight, which was not nominated for the Oscar in this category. (It was nominated for the "adapted" screenplay Oscar instead.)
