Rough Night

Recommended Posts

Kate Erbland at IndieWIRE claims that Rough Night is "the first big-studio R-rated comedy to be directed by a woman in nearly 20 years," and I don't know what she's talking about.

Just looking at our thread on the top-grossing films by female directors -- which lists all the female-directed films I can think of that have grossed over $100 million in North America -- I can see the R-rated romantic comedy It's Complicated, which was directed by Nancy Meyers and released by Universal in 2009 (less than eight years ago); it grossed $112.7 million in North America and $219.1 million worldwide. And I assume there may be other female-directed R-rated comedies that *didn't* gross as much.

Does anyone know what film came out "nearly 20 years" ago that Erbland might be referring to, and why it counts when films like It's Complicated don't?

Here's an R-rated trailer for the new film, in case you're wondering what it is:
