The 25 qualifying contenders (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • “Ana y Bruno”
  • “Dr. Seuss’ The Grinch”
  • “Early Man”
  • “Fireworks”
  • “Have a Nice Day”
  • “Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation”
  • “Incredibles 2”
  • “Isle of Dogs”
  • “The Laws of the Universe – Part I”
  • “Liz and the Blue Bird”
  • “Lu over the Wall”
  • “MFKZ”
  • “Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms”
  • “Mirai”
  • “The Night Is Short, Walk on Girl”
  • “On Happiness Road”
  • “Ralph Breaks the Internet”
  • “Ruben Brandt, Collector”
  • “Sgt. Stubby: An American Hero”
  • “Sherlock Gnomes”
  • “Smallfoot”
  • “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse”
  • “Tall Tales”
  • “Teen Titans Go! To the Movies”
  • “Tito and the Birds”

Cartoon Brew observes: "It’s a particularly diverse year for international animation, including entries from Mexico (Ana y Bruno), China (Have a Nice Day), Taiwan (On Happiness Road), Hungary (Ruben Brandt, Collector), Brazil (Tito and the Birds), and a record eight animated features produced in Japan."

And I'm guessing that last figure doesn't include Isle of Dogs, which is *set* in Japan but was produced in England by American and German animators?

Notably, I believe this is the first year that the *entire* Academy will be involved in nominating the films in this category; prior to this, only the Academy's Animation branch was involved in the nomination process, which allowed some good independent and foreign films to get some love (while more explicitly commercial films like The Lego Movie were not nominated at all, despite getting good reviews).

The nominees will be announced January 22.

(Edited January 15 to mark the films I have caught up with since originally posting this.)

Huh...I just got a screener offer for Sgt. Stubby and sort of laughed. Guess I have to watch it now.

Vote!

Note: the Oscar nominees include four of the five films with the most Annie nominations (the major Annie nominee that got excluded was Early Man), plus Mirai (which has two Annie nominations).

The one film that was nominated by most of the guilds and was *not* nominated by the Oscars was Dr Seuss' The Grinch.

  • Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse -- best animated feature, directing, writing, character design, character animation, production design, editing
  • Incredibles 2 -- storyboarding, music
  • Isle of Dogs -- voice acting (Bryan Cranston)
  • Mirai -- best animated INDEPENDENT feature
  • Ralph Breaks the Internet -- animated effects

So basically, Spider-Man won in all seven of the categories it was nominated in, Incredibles 2 got two awards, and the other three Oscar nominees won one Annie each.

That's the second time a guild has recognized Isle of Dogs in this category. Most of the other guilds have swung hard towards Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. Notably, *none* of the guilds have given their top prizes to the Disney-Pixar sequels (although Incredibles 2 and Ralph Breaks the Internet did win a few Annies in categories where Spider-Man and Isle of Dogs weren't nominated for anything).
