Neko Case- The Tigers Have Spoken

Recommended Posts

Guest thom_jurek
I'm debating purchasing the new live album "the tigers have spoken" by neko case.  Has anyone heard it yet? if so what are your thoughts? would you recommed it?

The bottom line is, it smokes. ABout half of the material is self-penned, including killer versions of "If You Knew," "The Tigers Have Spoken," "Blacklisted" and "Favorite." The covers are choice as well from Loretta Lynn's "Rated X," and Buffy Sainte Marie's "Soulful Shade Of Blue," and a treuly awesome "Wayfaring Stranger." Her band is the Sadies and the Pinetops guest as well. In addition, Kelly Hogan and the Mekons' Jon Rauhouse guest. There's a lot of life in the mix, it's warm but edgy and the performances are all top notch. This woman is awesome as a singer and as a songwriter. Based on her last two studio records, Furnace Room Lullaby and Blacklisted, I'd love to see her team up with Nick Cave for a project.

I heard one of the songs (I think it was "If You Knew") on the most recent Paste CD sampler and I looked around for a copy of the album at the local Barnes & Noble. All they had was Blacklisted, so I picked that up. Color me impressed. I shared a few thoughts on my latest blog entry.

"It's a dangerous business going out your front door." -- J.R.R. Tolkien
"I want to believe in art-induced epiphanies." -- Josie
"I would never be dismissive of pop entertainment; it's much too serious a matter for that." -- NBooth

"If apologetics could prove God, I would lose all faith in Him." -- Josie

"What if--just what if--the very act of storytelling is itself redemptive? What if gathering up the scraps and fragments of a disordered life and binding them between the pages of a book in all of their fragmentary disorder is itself a gambit against that disorder?" -- NBooth

Yeah, that sampler from Paste magazine was the first I had (knowingly) heard Neko. (And btw, kudos to Paste for giving away a free cd AND a free dvd with their mag!) That song ("If You Knew") is amazing, and I'm hoping to go see her at The Cat's Cradle this Friday night.

My first intro to Neko was thru the New Pornographers Electric Version album and then their debut Mass Romantics. Of course quite different style than her solos, but the passion in her voice is the same.
