If you look at the 25 year period starting from 1957's 12 Angry Men through to 1982's The Verdict, this man had very few missteps... The Wiz perhaps being his most glaring and unusual choice of projects. Truly an actor's director, bringing out the best performances from many of those who starred in his films, including Al Pacino in both Serpico and Dog Day Afternoon - Paul Newman in The Verdict - and he's one of the few directors to make you forget that Sean Connery was James Bond, pulling a terrific performance from Connery in The Hill and an absolutely stunning one in the little seen The Offence.
