Oscars 2005: Actress in a Supporting Role

Blanchett gets a nomination for mimic? Sigh. I love her in everything but there have been better examples of her greatness. It'd be a shame for her to win with *this* film after her wonderful leading performances of the past few years (kinda like when Judi Dench won for her eight minutes of Shakespeare in Love)

Haven't seen Hotel Rwanda, knew little about it until about a month ago but I'm desperate for the wonderful, wonderful Okonendo to get this one. Sorry Natalie Portman.

Well, that's how Jamie Foxx is planning to win his award ... personally, I think Don Cheadle should get that one (and I would not be upset at all if his co-star Okonedo won THIS award), but anyway, mimickry does do the trick sometimes.

I have a feeling Blanchett will be upset by Virginia Madsen, who fits the Academy's profile for this award - beautiful, maybe not a naturally great actress but slipping into a role that seems well suited to her. Think Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential (still one of the worst Oscar choices, IMO); Geena Davis in Accidental Tourist; Angelina Jolie in Girl, Interrupted; Mira Sorvino in Mighty Aprhodite; Jennifer Connelly in Beautiful Mind.

That, and if Foxx wins best actor (and he seems to have all the momentum behind him at this point) they might shy away from awarding two performances that mimic a legendary entertainer. I want to see Blanchett win an Oscar, because she's one of my favorites. But I'd rather her get a lead actress award for a meatier role.

"The most important thing is that people love in the same way. Whether they are monarchists, republicans, or communists, they feel pain in the same way, as well as hatred, jealousy, fear, and fear of death. Whether you are a deeply religious man or an atheist, if you have a toothache, it hurts just the same." - Krzysztof Kieslowski

"...it seems to me that most people I encounter aren't all that interested in the arts. Most of the people who are my age ... appear to be interested in golf, fertilizer, and early retirement schemes.... I will stop caring passionately about music, books, and films on the day that I die, and I'm hoping for Top 100 album polls in the afterlife." - Andy Whitman
