Best of Sixteen Horsepower

Recommended Posts

It struck me that if ever a band needed a "Best of" album it's Sixteen Horsepower. Criminally under-appreciated when together, and together no more. They've got four full length studio albums, and two EP's, so there's plenty of material to choose from. They need an album that fans can hand to someone who has never heard of them and say, "Here, this will kick your ass." Never mind that each one of their albums is good enough to be anyone else's "Best of."

The only rule is to keep it under 70 minutes. Here's mine:

1. "Praying Arm Lane" - Secret South

2. "Heel on the Shovel" - Sackcloth n' Ashes

3. "Scrawled in Sap" - Sackcloth n' Ashes

4. "Outlaw Song" - Folklore

5. "Sinnerman" - Folklore

6. "Burning Bush" - Secret South

7. "Low Estate" - Low Estate

8. "Wayfaring Stranger" - Secret South

9. "Phyllis Ruth" - Low Estate

10. "Just Like Birds" - Secret South

11. "Sac of Religion" - Low Estate

12. "Dead Run" - Low Estate

13. "Haw" - 16 Horsepower EP

14. "For Heaven's Sake" - Low Estate

15. "Nobody 'Cept You" - Secret South

16. "Alone and Forsaken" - Folklore

17. "Black Soul Choir" - Sackcloth and Ashes

Oh man, what a great idea. I'm going to actually put some thought into this one. I'll be back.

PS Your list looks great, Solishu. Then again, with all those 16HP songs, how could it not?

Oh man, I have had a lot of fun with this tonight. Thanks Solishu. I've gone back and listened to a lot. This is no definitive list, but it's still a teaser to some of the magic of this awesome group:

"Pure Clob Road" - Low Estate (3:43)

"Brimstone Rock" - Low Estate (4:29)

"For Heaven's Sake" - Low Estate (4:54)

"Sac of Religion" - Low Estate (3:28)

"The Denver Grab" - Low Estate (5:08)

"Ditch Digger" - Low Estate (3:22)

"Single Girl" - Folklore (2:35)

"Ruthie Lingle" - Sackcloth 'n Ashes (2:45)

"American Wheeze" - Hoarse (3:33)

"Splinters" - Secret South (5:19)

"Cinder Alley" - Secret South (4:42)

"Outlaw Song" - Folklore (4:29)

"Hutterite Mile" - Folklore (4:04)

"Clogger" - Secret South (3:28)

"Low Estate" - Low Estate (4:12)

"I Seen What I Saw" - Sackcloth 'n Ashes (3:25)

"Black Soul Choir" - Sackcloth 'n Ashes (3:52)

"My Narrow Mind" - Low Estate (2:59)

I went 1:04 over your limit but I have the potential on the G4 for 80 minute CDs. smile.gif

I am making a playlist/burning a disc of these selections just to be sure of the chosen order.

I would also like to take this time to note that my copy of Low Estate is personally autographed by David Eugene Edwards (marker on the actual disc) on his way out of the Schuba's Men's Room in Chicago.

Where's the "Best Of" Woven Hand thread?

Fun! It will be tough to narrow this down. Like Stef, I need to give this some thought.

I really like my song choices but the order stinks. I am going to refigure this order soon.

The only thing is that I wish I could have included some Woven Hand Songs, especially the song where he goes "the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak, so shake it." Heh

In fact, I wish I could've included all the Woven Hand songs. Oh - and I miss all the songs that 16HP did that didn't make my personal "Best of," so I guess 80 minutes just isn't enough for DEE.

No "Best Of 16HP" CD yet, but there will be a new live 2 CD set coming soon titled Live: March 2001. I think it is out now in Europe and it will be out in early May in the US on Alternative Tentacles.
