Diane, I saw from your film journal that you recently saw this. What'd you think?

What can we make of the fact that Lubitsch's weird caricatures of the Russians stick out so much in the name of comedy?

I mean, in spite of the fact that it's wall-to-wall hilarious.

Hi Russ. I enjoyed it. It was witty and clever and everything that I've come to expect from a Lubitsh film. And I've not seen many of Garbo's films; I was impressed by her here. I was also glad to see Felix Bressart (who played Buljanoff) again—I greatly enjoyed his performance in The Shop Around the Corner. Have you seen that one yet?

But as for your question, I don't know what to say. What do you think?

Sorry...wow, that non-answer is lame. These days, that seems to be the rule when it comes to my ability to post.

...and the guy who owns the store was in another Lubitsch film, I think.

To me, he'll always be the Wizard of Oz.

But as far as Lubitsch goes, I think Shop is my favorite so far.
