Leonard Maltin's 2011 movie guide does not even include him in his director's index. Oh well.

If he helmed reasonably entertaining, popular entertainment throughout the years then the choice will fit in with what an Oscar ceremony is supposed to be about.

Could be interesting, as Eddie Murphy's reputation vis-a-vis the Oscars is one of general petulance. When he presented the Best Picture award in 1988, he chastised the Academy for not giving more awards to black actors, and when he didn't win the Oscar for Dreamgirls in 2007, there were reports -- exaggerated, perhaps, but still -- that he left the ceremony in a huff. (Apparently he also presented awards in 1983 (Best Visual Effects) and 2009 (the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, which was given that year to Jerry Lewis).)

Source: Brett Ratner Out as Oscar Show Producer
Ratner had been named as the producer of the 2012 Academy Awards show, but he has been under fire for making a series of ill-judged remarks in recent days, including saying "rehearsal is for fags" and discussing his sex life with Howard Stern.
The Academy is expected to issue an announcement detailing the situation later today. It is not yet known whether Eddie Murphy, who stars in Ratner's film Tower Heist and was recruited by Ratner to serve as the host of the Oscar show, will remain involved with the production.

Please explain someone ...

Did Eddie Murphy withdraw in protest of Brett Ratner being canned (good for him if he did). Or was Murphy canned / encouraged to resign because he was part of Team Ratner? Or did someone finally You-Tube search Murphy's gay routine in RAW (which I remember even in 1987 thinking was ugly and mean-spirited, and I speak as someone who thought, and still thinks, the routine in DELIRIOUS was hilarious)?

I dunno, as I understand it, hosts are hired by the producer, and if the producer goes, then the host is in an awkward spot. Has a producer ever quit the Oscars before? If so, then there might be a precedent to measure Murphy against.

Brian Grazer to produce. The headline on this piece originally said that Grazer was hoping Eddie Murphy would reconsider and come back to host the show -- which, if Murphy had refused, REALLY wouldn`t have looked good -- but now they`re saying Grazer and the Academy have `moved on`.

And sure enough, in their discussion of this story, MTV Movies Blog renders the offending word in question "f**s". Good grief.

Meanwhile, The Los Angeles Times reminds us that Brian Grazer himself was associated with a `gay controversy` only just last year (that whole `electric cars are gay` thing from the trailer for The Dilemma, which Grazer produced).

To be fair, the remark came at the tail end of a whole string of comments that raised eyebrows about Ratner's fitness:

I'm thinking the "fag" thing might have been the straw that broke the camel's back. As Linda Holmes points out,

They both directed X-Men movies, so that's understandable. Just remember that Ratner directed the one that killed that iteration of the franchise.

Actually, the consensus I`ve been picking up from some movie blogs is the exact opposite of that. They think Ratner could have survived a single off-the-cuff non-malicious use of the word "fags" -- just look at how Tracy Morgan bounced back from his presumably premeditated stand-up routine about how he would stab his son if his son were gay, which is way worse than anything Ratner said -- but Ratner`s subsequent appearance on the Howard Stern show, in which he discussed his sexual habits in such vivid detail, is what broke the camel's back in this case.

Of course, the fact that Ratner indicated he hates rehearsals also didn`t bode well for the sort of, um, production values he might have brought to the Oscars -- which are, after all, broadcast live. If the show had turned out badly, everyone would have been quick to point his anti-rehearsal attitude, and everyone would have asked what the Academy was THINKING by hiring this guy in the first place.
