LARGE titles are likely TOP TEN Conteders.

DECEMBER
Maria Full of Grace*.....B+
Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (DVD, third viewing)....B
The extended cut isn't as good as the original cut. More stupid, crass jokes, nothing that really adds to the experience.
The Return*.....A+
The Motorcycle Diaries*(DVD).....A-/B+
Blue in Green*.....A-
Had the privilege of watching a DVD of the new experimental film from the Unica Collaborative. It is a strong collaboration, largely improvisational, with a large cast of completely convincing characters. Watch for opportunities to see this film as the word spreads.
Vera Drake*.....B+
The Bourne Supremacy (DVD).....A-
Even better the second time. Performances, editing, and soundtrack are all exceptional. I think I like this film every bit as much as Spider-man 2. It's competing with the X-Men franchise as the strongest-running franchise going.
The Lord of the Rings - The Return of the King: Extended Edition[b]*.....A-
[b]Finding Neverland
*.....A-
Hotel Rwanda*.....A-
The Terminal (on DVD) .....C+
Ocean's Twelve*.....B
The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou*.....B+
In Good Company*.....B-
The Aviator*.....A-

NOVEMBER
A Love Song for Bobby Long*.....B-
Wallace and Gromit: A Close Shave - and - The Wrong Trousers (VHS) .... B+
A Very Long Engagement*.....B
I Am David*.....C+
Sideways*.....A-
Metallica: Some Kind of Monster* (VHS) .....B+
House of Flying Daggers (The Lovers)*.....B+
Like Hero, it's visually magnificent, breathtaking, awe-inspiring. Unlike
Hero, there is not even a hint of love for totalitarianism here; quite the
opposite. It has one plot twist that made me cheer out loud with joy (as I had
desperately hoped that twist was coming.) But then it followed that with another
twist that robbed me of that joy and left me furious with the storytellers. And then
yet ANOTHER twist came along that showed me the film wasn't going to end up
celebrating love at all, but rather bemoaning just how it tears people apart. Love
being defined, of course, as "I will get what I want, at all costs."
Signs (DVD).....B+
Before Sunset (second viewing, DVD).....A
The Incredibles(second viewing.....A) (Better the second time.)
Close Your Eyes* (DVD).....B
The Incredibles*.....A-

OCTOBER
The Polar Express*.....B
Before Sunrise (DVD).....A
Ray*.....B+
Woman, Thou Art Loosed*.....B+
Primer*.....B+/A-
Spin*.....C+

SEPTEMBER
Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (second viewing, DVD).....A
Northfork* (DVD).....B+
I Heart Huckabees*.....B-
Dogville (third viewing).....A-
My Girl Friday*.....B
Time of the Wolf*.....A
An intensely absorbing film that challenges us
aesthetically, intellectually, emotionally, and spiritually.

(Recommended with strong cautions due to the graphic onscreen slaying of
a horse.)

Hannah and Her Sisters .....A
The Thin Man*.....B+
Garden State*.....C+
OT:Our Town* (DVD).....A-
THX 1138 - Special Edition* .....B-

AUGUST

We Don't Live Here Anymore*.....C+
Lantana (second viewing, DVD).....A-
Mean Creek (second viewing)... B+/A-

* = first time. + = cinema viewing.
January 2004:
+ LORD OF THE RINGS: THE RETURN OF THE KING (3rd time)
* I CAPTURE THE CASTLE
*+ HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG
* THE HULK. So glad we didn't spend an evening out and buy tickets, etc.
PAT AND MIKE.
KING OF HEARTS (Roi des Coeurs)
* MUMFORD-- not as funny as I'd been led to expect
MATEWAN-- Still one of John Sayles's best
* ANCHORESS--1993.
* CHILDREN OF HEAVEN
* GREENFINGERS-- Likeable, but no surprises.

February
* ASOKA (1998)-- 3 hours of Bollywood historical melodrama, punctuated by 80's MTV-style musical numbers. War and religious bigotry--bad! Peace and love--good!.
BREAKDOWN-- Kurt Russell takes vengeance on redneck baddies who kidnap his wife and hold her for ransom. Extreme violence, and poor Kathleen Quinlan has thankless victim role. No grace, no hope, no humor..
* SPELLBOUND
PAPILLON

March
* MATCHSTICK MEN
* SCHOOL OF ROCK
+* THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST
RAMBLING ROSE--It had been years since I saw this in the theater, and it seems rather pretentious now. Director Coolidge's commentary is interesting. Diane Ladd, Laura Dern, and Robert Duvall are all fine. Lukas Hass shows some promise.
UNFORGIVEN
+* HIDALGO
* GANGS OF NEW YORK
LE RETOUR DE MARTIN GUERRE--one of my all-time favorites
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER--the movie that started it all
+* THE RECKONING
* THE TUXEDO

April
* THE WINSLOW BOY
HORATIO HORNBLOWER: THE DUEL
HORATION HORNBLOWER: THE FIRE SHIPS
* SHATTERED GLASS--A fascinating character study in virtue and evil as "an infinite capacity for self-deception," as M. Scott Peck defined it.
+ THE LADYKILLERS (2004)
THE LADYKILLERS (1955)
THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY--such a matter-of-fact caper flick. The Victorian period details are fascinating, but I prefer my black comedy a little blacker, thanks.

May
* KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER--beautifully done; as far as I recall, reasonably faithful to the book and remarkably representative of medieval Christian world-view. Period details are gorgeous. Kristin's parents are a wonderful study of a medieval marriage. DVD interview with writer/director Liv Ullmann is an interesting extra.
* TIMELINE
* BIG FISH
TOPSY-TURVY--Netflix had this as "out of print" and "long wait," so I went ahead and bought it. Well worth owning, IMO, for the gorgeously reproduced G&S numbers and the meticulous detailing of late-Victorian daily life at its best and worst. The peculiar disjunction between Sullivan's muscial aspirations and his all-too-lusty personal life; the light comedy of Gilbert's libretti and the tragedy of his family life--much to ponder for all artists in these two, and in the brief glimpses of the actors' lives as well.
* PAPER WEDDING (1990)--Solemn Quebecois version of Green Card, starring Genevieve Bujold. Almost made me want to apologize to Ted Baehr for putting down his contempt for French movies, but I believe this is an exception.
* THE LAST SAMURAI--Ken Watanabe should have won Best Actor, but IMO, the real Last Samurai movie is still Ghost Dog.
*+ RAISING HELEN--mostly harmless.

June
* MANSFIELD PARK
* THE PRICE OF MILK--that was fun.
* COWBOY BEBOP: THE MOVIE
THE LAVENDER HILL MOB--the in-laws remembered seeing this classic Guinness performance in the theater when it was released in 1961-ish.

July
* TO END ALL WARS
* A MIGHTY WIND
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN
THE 5000 FINGERS OF DR. T-- I'm sure this was ground-breaking stuff in the 50's. Now it seems stale and creaky, and why shouldn't a boy learn to play the piano? As a live-action Dr. Seuss movie, its main advantage over the revolting "Cat in the Hat" is that--well--it's not actually repellent.
+* SPIDERMAN 2
THE MISSION-- Not having seen this film since it was in theaters in the mid-80s, I noticed a couple of details in the ending that seemed more hopeful than I remembered. Director Joffe's commentary well worth a listen, too, highlighting the parallels between his role working with the real Indians who portray the Guarani, and the role of the 18th c. archbishop who held their lives in his hands.
+* KING ARTHUR-- Amazingly, still better than First Knight, but so many things wrong with this pompous, pseudo-historicization. Still waiting for the definitive Arthurian film. Until then, MP&tHG rules.
*SOLOMON AND GAENOR-- Deserves to be better known.
*SOLARIS (dir. Steven Soderbergh)-- Made me wish I'd either read the original story or seen the Tarkovsky film, or both.
*PARADISE ROAD-- A good companion piece for "To End All Wars," focused on experiences of women in a Japanese POW camp.
*SHANGHAI KNIGHTS-- Good, silly fun, but not as good as Shanghai Noon.
*LOVE ACTUALLY-- Liked it; didn't love it (except Laura Linney's part). Upon viewing the deleted scenes, felt all of them had been left out to very good effect. Why in the world was the little boy asked to provide commentary on a film he wasn't old enough to see? The other actors commented on it, and indeed, he had very little to say.
*MOSTLY MARTHA-- Off-beat story about food & love. Despite the subtitles, DH stayed awake.

August
+* THE VILLAGE
+* DE-LOVELY
* HEART OF LIGHT-- Deserves to be better known. Should be nominee for 100 Spiritual Films.
* ITALIAN FOR BEGINNERS-- Should be nominee for 100 Spiritual Films.
* YEH DILLAGI-- Sabrina goes Bollywood!
+* PRINCESS DIARIES 2: ROYAL ENGAGEMENT
* YI YI

September
* MAUVAISE GRAINE-- Billy Wilder directs French version of "Gone in 60 Seconds"--only since it's 1935-ish, the car thieves are gone in 2 or 3 minutes and have hearts of gold: it's also a prodigal son tale.
THINGS CHANGE-- Don Ameche & Joe Mantegna are a joy in this little David Mamet film about honor and friendship in unexpected places.
MR. DEEDS GOES TO TOWN-- Still a classic.
+* SKY CAPTAIN AND THE WORLD OF TOMORROW
* MEAN GIRLS-- Funny and pointed--satire at its best. Plus, TCK angle. Commentaries & Queen Bees & Wannabes author interview also worthwhile.
KRISTIN LAVRANSDATTER-- Still excellent--definitely belongs in the A&F 100.

October
* LARA CROFT, TOMB RAIDER: THE CRADLE OF LIFE-- Amazingly boring, for an action adventure movie. No surprises at all.
+* THE FORGOTTEN-- Forgettable.
* LADY JANE--Mostly remarkable for a stellar cast, including a very young Helena Bonham Carter as Jane, Patrick Stewart, John Wood, and Michael Hordern. Overly earnest political commentary. I gave up 2/3 through it, and I usually love historical drama.
* VAN HELSING-- Attractive, yet deadly.
* THE TERMINAL
* MY MOTHER'S CASTLE

November
* JERSEY GIRL-- The soft, gooey heart of Kevin Smith, with extra four-letter words to prove he's still Kevin Smith. DVD extras are fun.
* MY FATHER'S GLORY-- Should actually precede My Mother's Castle.
* THE WHOLE TEN YARDS
* TRIXIE-- Emily Watson does comedy!
+* THE INCREDIBLES-- Incredible!
* SHREK 2
THE RECKONING

December
+ NATIONAL TREASURE
* PETER PAN (dir. P.J. Hogan)
+* FINDING NEVERLAND
* LUTHER
* LIKE WATER FOR CHOCOLATE
* I, ROBOT
* LUTHER
* THE QUIET AMERICAN
+* LEMONY SNICKET'S A SEQUENCE OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
* RETURN OF THE KING-EE
+* THE AVIATOR
