Started "Into the Wild" this evening. At about 25 minutes in we are quite enjoying it. Hope to finish it Sunday night.

FWIW, this movie has stayed with me over the years in ways that other films from that year have not. But I only saw it once and have never watched it again, in part because I lent my DVD copy to a friend who only recently returned it! (I don't think he ever watched it. Oh well.)

Wild at Heart tomorrow night. Doesn't look like Dune is going to be added to the David Lynch retrospective I've been attending. I'll have to rent that along with Lost Highway and Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me, which were shown, but on nights I couldn't attend.

Wild at Heart tomorrow night.

An interesting film that I bet would be great on the big screen. Can't wait to hear what you think. It won the Palme D'Or in 1990.

I'm going to check out PROMETHEUS tomorrow night, and I have BLACK NARCISSUS, INLAND EMPIRE, and DEAD RINGERS sitting on my desk.

Jean Renoir's Grand Illusion is playing at a local theater this week, so I'll definitely be making time for that. Also, Costa's Ossos is on tap at home.

In my on-going effort to catch up with the films of 2011, this morning I watched The Skin I Live In, which I liked a lot, and I also have Take Shelter from Netflix. Tomorrow morning will be Renoir's The Little Match Girl (1928).

Anyone going to the Complete James Bond Retrospective?

I might attend a couple. I only have 3 Bond left films to see on the big screen, and unfortunately one of them - Never Say Never Again - isn't included in this retrospective (not surprising, considering the Blu-ray tie-in). The others I may see are On Her Majesty's Secret Service which, after the awkward opening that I blame completely on the writers and producers, is one of my absolute favorite Bond films. And I never got to see Casino Royale when it first played in theatres.

edit: Looks like OHMSS is going to remain a "viewed only on TV" experience. Already have plans for tomorrow, which nips it in the bud.

Watched TO CATCH A THIEF last night. Not sure what I'll watch before the week is out.

In my on-going effort to catch up with the films of 2011, this morning I watched The Skin I Live In, which I liked a lot, and I also have Take Shelter from Netflix. Tomorrow morning will be Renoir's The Little Match Girl (1928).

I would love to read some of your thoughts on THE SKIN I LIVE IN. I've been trying to process that film, and the more I think about it, the more I end up conflicted.

Ryan, I'm perpetually ambivalent about Almodovar. The films I like best (All About My Mother, Talk to Her, and now The Skin I Live In) are all transgressive melodramas, and I have a real weakness for transgressive melodramas -- from Borzage to Sirk to Cassavetes to Haynes. The Skin I Live In is especially interesting because of the ways it twists and distorts so many horror and gothic genre conventions. I'd love to see it on a double bill with Claire Denis's Trouble Every Day.

Where in PA?

I got a Blu-Ray/streaming player for Father's Day, and we reupped with Netflix after a several-year hiatus. I don't make it out to the theater much anymore, so I had no trouble finding about fifty movies for our instant queue comprised of festival films I've missed over the past several years. I'm thinking SOUL KITCHEN or TUESDAY, AFTER CHRISTMAS.
