A few months ago, I posted a thread to drum up some song suggestions for my coffee house performance. It went well, but some of the thoughts shared stuck with me.
Tonight, my friends are performing their ongoing comedy radio serial (it's in the vein of Buck Rogers and the Phantom), and asked me to play a few songs between the segments.
I'm playing four covers. I chose an '80s theme. They are:
-"Girls Just Want to Have Fun" (Cyndi Lauper) It's definitely akin to the Rawlings/Welch version
-"Smooth Operator" (Sade) In a fun upbeat key!
-"Caribbean Queen" (Billy Ocean) Changed it to a minor key, lots of dissonance. Probably my favorite musically.
-"Dancing in the Dark" (Springsteen) Pretty straight cover w/ an electric guitar. I'm going to see if the audience wants to whistle the synth line.
The Sade song is the tricky one--I want to do it differently than the recorded, jazzy version, but the key change made the vocal line fairly hard for me. We'll see how it turns out!
