Entertaining Angels was made by the same Catholic production company that made Romero; both are solid films which revisit Christians in history and important social issues.

Diary of a City Priest is a recent independent film based on the writings of a priest (David Morse) in an urban mission and is intended in some ways as an homage to Diary of a Country Priest although stylistically, it isn't that similar. It was recently released on DVD.

Repentance is a Georgian (Russian) film made in 1984 that uses a unique mixture of fantasy, black comedy, and drama to criticize Stalinism, suggest a spiritual revival, and let more than a few skeletons out of the closet. It was shelved until Gorbachev released it in 1987 and personally promoted it as the token film of glasnost. It played to sell-out crowds in Russia for months and months.

Mike, I just watched Mamoulian's Jeckyll & Hyde and I agree, it's pretty incredible. It was just released on a very nice DVD that includes the inferior '41 remake with Spencer Tracy and Ingrid Bergman, an amiable commentary by a horror scholar, and the Hare & Hyde Bugs Bunny short. Recommended.

I just rented that today based off your message here. I plan on watching it later in the week.

Being a much bigger fan of lists than I should be, I love this idea. But I'm also a bit uncomfortable that we're going to rush to a vote. I gotta imagine there aren't many of us who have seen even 75% of the movies on this list. Maybe this can be a long-term project, with people voting once they think they've reached critical mass and then continually updating as they see more nominated films. Or maybe it would be better for people to rate each of the films they've seen. This would give each movie an average score, plus a snapshot of how many people have seen the film. That way you wouldn't have to choose between 20 masterpieces; you could legitimately give "10" to each of them.

Just throwing out ideas.

And for other possibilities...
25th Hour
Apocalypse Now (amazing film on the nature of the human condition)
City of Lost Children (so many interesting issues on the nature of creation, esp. Milton's themes in Paradise Lost)
Dreamlife of Angels
Exotica (Atom Egoyan)
In this World
Lilya 4-Ever
Three Colors: Red (not sure why this one hasn't been mentioned)
Time of the Wolf
Werckmeister Harmonies
Yi Yi (I know Mike H has my back on this one)

The Count of Monte Cristo - 2002; directed by Kevin Reynolds.
(I believe there are several older adaptations, but I'm not sure which one is more universally praised)

Ya know, this film didn't generate a lot of discussion here, but I liked it quite a bit, especially on second viewing.

By the time I got around to seeing it that second time, I had seen Martin Scorcese's "Gangs of New York" -- a wildly uneven but extremely ambitious revenge movie -- and it occurred to me that the modest "Count" remake told a similar story much more efficiently, and with more redemptive overtones.

Good pick!

Yes, I know what you mean. I'm mulling various approaches to the question (weighted voting based on films actually viewed, ongoing updates/revisions/editions, putting the thing in the hands of some sort of editorial squad, having a mix of popular "highest vote getter" poll winners and less-well-known-but-gotta-be-there films and personal-selection-of-specific-Promontorians flicks, etc, etc), and have initiated correspondence with our Mighty Leader about how he might prefer to see this unfold.

Thanks for the ideas about how we might arrive at our Hundred (or 101, as has been elsewhere suggested) - keep 'em coming!

All to be duly noted in the next list update. Isn't this fun!

I enjoyed watching it, but have to admit that the article at CT's Books & Culture carried a lot of weight with me. It starts out...
"If the creators of the latest film version of Alexandre Dumas' The Count of Monte Cristo adapted Moby Dick, not only would the movie end with a triumphant Ahab fatally harpooning the great beast, but at the subsequent barbecue the crusty captain would also apologize to his Pequod crew—who've lived to tell the tale—for being so obsessive and crabby."
...and goes on to compare the film not only to the original novel, but also to the other film versions. (Note, added later: Nope, apart from mentioning that there are other film versions, it doesn't actually provide any details. #-o ) It makes a pretty good case that the robust and compelling theology of the novel has been pretty much undermined in this latest filmization.

Still, it was fun to watch! And I'm always tickled in ANY movie where they talk about God, and forgiveness, and all that. Darn groovy.

I brought that particular film up because I watched it Tuesday. My knowledge of films has expanded quite a bit since the last time I watched it, and I was surprised at a number of more "commercial" qualities with the adaptation, if you will. I still love the end shot - "God Will Grant Me Justice". A bit much, but a good end cap to the movie.

Thanks for the link to the article. I might have to put Dumas on the summer reading list.

And while I'm thinking about other Hollywood Bible films - where is Cecil B. DeMille's The Ten Commandments? It features the champion of Bible films - Charlton Heston.

So, Peter. Do you figure either or both should be on our list?

(Well, I'll definitely be putting 1956 on there, since Clint mentioned it. But, your two bits worth?)

Well, if we're just racking up nominees for now, sure, why not. They're both interesting examples of how Bible stories can be tailored to address the moral and spiritual problems of the times -- the 1923 film takes aim at atheistic modernism and religious fundamentalism, the 1956 film at Russian Communism and scientific rationalism.

Sometimes I am just trying to work and films for this thread pop into mind.

Liam
Sphere if I remember correctly the ending had an interesting spiritual theme, although I am not sure this would qualify for an "essential" movie.

When is the cutoff for nominees?

I don't know. Not yet. I'll wait until I've heard back from Mr Overstreet about any suggestions he might have about how to proceed, then I'll let people know some sort of cutoff date.

Keep 'em comin'!
