The question is who will direct this upcoming version of King Lear with Anthony Hopkins, Keira Knightley, and Gwyneth Paltrow?

And how will it compare to the upcoming BBC version starring Ian McKellen and Romola Garai?

Shall we hereby declare it Lear Year?

The Godfather Part III has been described as Lear-ish too, no?

Actually I think "The Year of Lear" sounds better.

And it's sounding better all the time.

Naomi Watts is in with Paltrow and Knightley.
What father wouldn't go mad?

Now you know who inspired Kurosawa.

Looks a little like Anakin S. in Return of the Jedi.

Methinks the material is a bit beyond both Paltrow and Knightley, but hey. At least Paltrow is playing one of the nasty daughters, which will be interesting.

Well, I'm disappointed.

A $25m (£17.6m) big-screen adaptation of King Lear starring Keira Knightley and Anthony Hopkins may have fallen victim to the recession.

Hopkins was due to play the ageing monarch, with Knightley signed up for the role of his youngest daughter, Cordelia. Gwyneth Paltrow and Naomi Watts were also on the cast list as the king's disloyal elder daughters, Regan and Goneril.

According to the Daily Telegraph, a spokesman for production company Ruby Films said the project, which was announced at last year's Cannes film festival, would not now be going ahead, but refused to comment on why it had been spiked.

The Telegraph report speculates that the global financial crisis might have scuppered the film, but producers may also have been put off by the announcement earlier this month of a rival Lear movie starring Al Pacino.
