First, Hugh Jackman turned it down.

Then, media columnists went nuts suggesting others.

My favorite suggestion was Robert Downey Jr. until I stumbled onto a better idea: Will Ferrell *as* James Lipton.

Nevertheless, this is a shame.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences' newly selected producers Adam Shankman & Bill Mechanic went to Ben Stiller and Robert Downey Jr and asked them to host as a duo. It would have been a killer combo. But the answer was no.

This should make you happy, Jeff:

Steve Martin, Alec Baldwin to host Oscars
Martin has hosted the Oscarcast twice before. Baldwin, star of NBC's "30 Rock," was a supporting actor nominee in 2003 for "The Cooler."

It does indeed. Thanks. I thought Alec Baldwin was too good an idea to come true.

It's kind of funny that these two guys are being paired up for this gig, since they happen to be co-starring in the upcoming film It's Complicated as two men competing for the attention of Meryl Streep -- the reigning Oscar nominee of our times.
