As much as I have admired IMAGE journal, I feel I should air this little grievance after recently sending an art submission. I don’t mind having my artwork rejected, knew it was a longshot – but to have it stolen or trashed, instead of being returned in my SASE, is unprofessional, to say the least.

Dear phlox,
We did some investigating into your submission by looking up your name, and it turns out that there was not enough postage to send back 3 ounces of paper. In cases like that, we send back only a rejection slip without the original manuscript or art, as we cannot afford to pay return postage for the 1500+ submissions we get every year. The artwork is then recycled. We do wish the rejection process was a little more warm and responsive—and to find out in addition that your art is gone must feel much worse!—but we do the best we can with our small staff + interns.
Yours,
Anna
