Sorry for asking this because I'm incompetent about formatting. I tried looking for a solution to this on the site but couldn't find anything. How do you get rid of annoying formatting defaults.

Personally, I hate emoticons. I also often formulate my ideas by (1), (2), (3), or more often (a), (, ©, (d), etc.

How do I write ( for instance, without suddenly discovering that I'm using emoticons in my writing like a little girl. Where is the default setting on this that I can change?

put a space in the parenthesis, you can have either
or b ) or b.)
