This is the main thread that there's been some discussion of Piss Christ so I may as well post this here: Serano's photo has been vandalised in France reports The Guardian

(For me, a better headline would have been "Piss Christ Slashed".

The show is now open at the Tacoma Art Museum, and does include the Wojnarowicz piece!

I reccommend it very highly!

This does not give audiences license to invent their own meanings without first carefully considering the work from the artist's perspective.

Ah, but apparently artists have license to invent their own meanings for religious symbols without first carefully considering, blah blah blah.

I won't link to it because I don't like angering people unless I have a great reason, but I bet you could google it:

Via John Darnielle's tumblr, i found a piece by an unknown artist called "Mountain Blast Powerade Christ". What you are imagining is probably correct.

He writes:

as a Catholic at the time I had all kinds of ~feelings~ about the whole controversy, largely because I consider Piss Christ a very devout work which showed up its detractors as people more concerned with appearances than actual spirituality. man oh man I used to think a lot about that piece, about what it meant, about how it inspired such visceral reaction
Mountain Blast Powerade Christ on the other hand just makes me laugh ‘til I cry
