After six years of delays, George R.R. Martin's fifth novel in the "A Song of Ice and Fire" series will be released July 12, 2011. And that date is set in stone. Or forged in Valyrian steel.

Information on his blog here. There's also a nice picture of the cover.

I'm afraid I won't believe it until I have an actual copy in my hands.

Some photos illustrating the ginormasity of the manuscript. Hot dang.

Also, I looked at Wikipedia to see who the POV characters are for this book. That got me thinking...which characters do people like or like the least? I did some searches online and some of the common answers surprise me. People don't like Davos? Really? I found him one of the most sympathetic characters in the series.

My favorite POV characters are Jon, Tyrion, Arya, and Jaime. I'm not sure where he ranks in my list of POV characters, but I like Davos as a character in his own right, POV or otherwise. He's one of the few characters in the series who acts primarily from a sense of honor and duty, rather than blind ambition. Conversely, I'm not sure if I like Bran all that much as a character, but I'm very intrigued by the story unfolding in his chapters.

My least favorite POV character is Cersei.

The New Yorker has a lengthy, fascinating look at the world of George R.R. Martin...and the fans that hate him.

Publishers Weekly is the first out of the gate with a very early (positive) review. There are a few very minor (in my opinion) spoilers, in case you're wondering.

Due to an error, Amazon.de ships a number of copies early. Oops. Expect spoilers to start popping up in the next few days.

My wife got it for me as a gift for our first anniversary, so I'll have to wait at least 'til this weekend. Must...avoid...spoilers.

Meanwhile, I'm on Disc 22 of 28 in the audiobook of Game of Thrones. I guess I'd better avoid this thread for a long, long time.

So far so good. It is exactly what I expected for this point in the series.

My copy arrived today, but I'd just seen The Tree of Life and so I spent most of the evening trying to put together my thoughts on the film. I plan to start reading in earnest tomorrow.
