Maybe I'll last longer than May this year.

January
Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame - a kinda dopey start to the new year
Attack the Block - superb in every way
Win Win - good movie, but didn't live up to the hype
Young Adult - grim, excellent character study of a narcissist
Midnight in Paris - charming but slight
Certified Copy
Tintin - a cacophanous, unengaging disappointment
Mission: Impossible
In a Better World - excellent
Tree of Life - Malick and me just don't mix
The Town
Nostalgia for the Light - easily in my top 5 for 2011

February
Drive - all cold surfaces (some blood-spattered); by comparison, makes Michael Mann films seem warm and fuzzy
A Dangerous Method - all-around excellent film
Morning Glory - a pleasing bonbon
After the Wedding
Bridesmaids - astonishingly unfunny
Youth in Revolt - a charming amoral tale
Tokyo Story - Thank God for Ozu
The Complete Jean Vigo, incl. Zero for Conduct and L'Atalante - fantastic, essential viewing
The Secret World of Arrietty

March
Bruno
The Walking Dead, Season 1
Tuesday, After Christmas
The Only Son (Ozu's first talkie)
Point Blank - masterful framing of scenes
In Bruges
Mon Oncle Antoine - slice of rural Quebec life turns surreal
13 Assassins - my first Miike film, not bad
The Hunger Games - pretty good, after the initial unnecessary handheld vertigo

April
Melancholia - I guess I'm just not that into von Trier
The Skin I Live In - another excellent Almodovar film
Johnny English Reborn - at my kids' request; winsomely predictable
Airplane!
Titanic 3D
The Rock
There Was a Father - the most propagandistic, and my least favorite, Ozu
Norwegian Wood
Airplane!
Airplane 2
Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol
Downton Abbey, Season 1
Into the Abyss - best film I've seen in 2 months
Iron Man

May
The Way - rich, delightful on 2nd viewing, too
Thor
The Avengers
Scott Pilgrim
Bobby - eager for more films by Estevez
Carnage - meh, so kids and adults are beastly
Grizzly Man
Inception - still wonderfull the 5th or so time around
Justified, Season 1
Pirates: Band of Misfits
Rise of the Planet of the Apes
Aguirre: The Wrath of God
Encounters at the End of the World
The Dictator

June
The Dark Knight
Rango
Brave

July
Fitzcarraldo
Fearless
This is Spinal Tap
Prometheus
Fata Morgana
L'Auberge Espagnole - still quite likeable on viewing #2
Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows
Sherlock Holmes, Season 2 - much preferred to the title immediately above
Justified, Season 2 - much weaker entry than Season 1, questionable if I'll continue with it
Burden of Dreams
Werner Herzog Eats His Shoe
Letting Go of God
Stand by Me
Moonrise Kingdom - my favorite new film of the year to date
The Dark Knight Rises
The Amazing Spider-Man

August
The Tillman Story
Total Recall (2012)
Shaun of the Dead
Beasts of the Southern Wild - my second favorite new film of the year
Beasts of the Southern Wild - second bigscreen viewing
Moonrise Kingdom - ditto (fun double feature with my kids)
Jiro Dreams of Sushi
Incident at Loch Ness - fun to see Herzog poke fun at his persona
Bourne Legacy - surprised by how good this was
Ted - surprisingly tame and unfunny

September
Robot and Frank - delightful, touching
Hamlet - with David Tennant and Patrick Stewart - quite good, overall
George Harrison: Living in the Material World - hit the high points, but disappointingly superficial
Fellowship of the Ring - at my older son's request; I didn't have high hopes for re-viewing it, but liked it a lot
Forgettiing Sarah Marshall
Adam's Apples
Margaret
Zombieland - still a hoot
LOTR: Two Towers - lots of filler and silly dialogue
Return of the King

October
The Avengers - didn't hold up well with viewing #2
Looper - so-so
Seven Psychopaths - OK, but was hoping for much better from the guy who made In Bruges
Mosquito Coast

November
Wreck-It Ralph
Safety Not Guaranteed
Holy Motors
The Man with a Movie Camera - Vertov's silent classic; very apt viewing for the day after Holy Motors, to realize that film trickery has a very long history
Man of the Century
Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter
Contagion
Lincoln - loved it; my favorite Spielberg
The Assassination of Jesse James... - drags a bit, but still a favorite on 3rd viewing

December
Killing Them Softly - much better than most critics led me to believe
Moonrise Kingdom
The Hobbit - meh
The Rage in Placid Lake
Haywire - underwhelmed
The Big Lebowski

+ Theater viewing
* repeat viewing

December
+ Les Misérables (yeah, too many closeups, but still good, except for miscast Russell Crowe; Dad liked it, though all music tends to sound the same to him)
+ Jack Reacher (serviceable action thriller; Dad followed it pretty well; crazy violent)
Safety Not Guaranteed (clever, but I couldn't care enough about the characters)
+ The Hobbit (2D)--definitely setting out to "feel all stretched--like butter scraped over too much bread" but not as bad as I'd feared
+ Life of Pi (visually brilliant--made me believe in tigers; theologically bunk. Thank God, I already believe in God.)
+ Wreck-it Ralph (I seemed to be the only one in the the theater laughing, and I don't even play video games)
One for the Money (disposable, but more bearable than the novels. When will someone make a Kinsey Milhone movie?)

November
* Camelot (on TCM; does it count as rewatch when first viewing was in 1968?)
+ Flight (previews barely hint at where this one ends up. Difficult, but worthwhile)
+ Skyfall (almost classic Bond & a tribute to Judi Dench)
+ Lincoln (fascinating portrayal of a momentous event; great cast)

October
* Sullivan's Travels (TCM; best comedy about comedy ever)
* Kind Hearts & Coronets (TCM; best black comedy ever)
The Raven (English Club event; I would never, ever have watched this voluntarily otherwise. What a mess.)
+* Argo (took my Dad; he liked it. I found it a bit slow on second viewing)
+ Argo (well done; plus, some nice location shots of Istanbul)
+ Pitch Perfect (comedy that's actually funny rather than gross (mostly), plus music--very enjoyable)
+ Looper (actually quite good in terms of plot, but very violent)
* The Avengers (on DVD, with Whedon commentary--excellent as usual)

September
Sampoorna Raamaayan (not the famous one; this Ramayana has all the roles played by children & teens, with results ranging from the sublime to the bizarre; also, very bad monkey costumes)
I Don't Know How She Does It (I don't know how I got through this. It was ridiculous)

August
Paper Heart (pleasant little faux-documentary, but it's no Once.)

July
+ Beasts of the Southern Wild
The Decoy Bride (Netflix streaming David Tennant in rom-com set in the Hebrides? I am there)
* Megamind (pleasant diversion)
+ Moonrise Kingdom (not really a Wes Anderson fan--usually find him precious & overly mannered--but liked this very much)

June
+ Brave (score for the princess AND her complete nuclear family AND the entire kingdom. Overall, a win for free will.)
+ Monsieur Lazhar (good reviews were on target, fortunately, since I chose this hoping that my dad would enjoy it since it was in French, which he speaks, with English subtitles to help his failing hearing. Success, even though most of the French was heavy Quebecois. Lovely film.)
Love Happens (another movie I wanted to like more than I did, but it just didn't catch hold despite good performances by Aaron Eckhart & Martin Sheen, but Jennifer Aniston seemed more "meh" than usual)
* We Bought a Zoo (DVD bought for my parents; replaced because has a slight glitch about 2/3 through; otherwise fine & still fun)
Everybody Sing (on TCM; lesser known Judy Garland vehicle from 1938, before big 1939 hit Wizard of Oz. Also starring Fanny Brice. Garland is trying too hard, as is everyone, and has one regrettable number in blackface)
+* The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (with dad, who had trouble following the dialogue because of his hearing loss, but enjoyed the Indian setting)
+* Snow White and the Huntsman (with friends--VFX still brilliant; story made even less sense)

May
+ Snow White and the Huntsman (free preview; brilliant VFX, Kristen Stewart as Snow almost redeems herself from Bella)
+ The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (stellar British cast of elders in India--of course I'm there. Comedy a bit expected at times, but still effective & sweet.)
+* The Avengers (in 3D, with dad; a bit OTT for him, worth a second viewing for me, but we skipped the shawarma)
+ Damsels in Distress (written & dir. Whit Stillman, perfect "palate cleanser" for academic year; bittersweet kooky comedy that ends with musical dance numbers--perfect)
+ The Avengers (Joss Whedon rules--of course)

April
+ The Hunger Games (I've read the book; not as wild about this series as some people are, but in some ways I prefer the film.
+ Casablanca (special 70th anniversary theatrical showing, with pre-film TCM featurette on the film's history. Beautiful, and fun to see with sister & friends)
+ The Cabin in the Woods (this + Justified finale = all the death & dismemberment I can take in one week, but at least Cabin is Joss Whedon & Drew Goddard, so it had a point, and along the way, was frequently funny.)

March
+ Mirror Mirror (better than expected and well worth the price for the costumes and sets)
Alice Adams (on TCM; early Katharine Hepburn is devastating)
+ John Carter (of Mars, 3D. If we could all just agree that it's a great B sci-fi movie, there'd be less fussing because it's not a GREAT sci-fi movie. Could have been more fun, it wasn't cheesy.)
*+ We Bought a Zoo (at the cheap 2nd-run theater, with my Dad, who enjoyed it very much. We both wished my mother could have seen it. Maybe when it comes out on DVD.)
Of Gods and Men (finally; watched w/ my Dad, who seemed to appreciate it too)
*+ The Artist (with my Dad, who enjoyed it a great deal)
+ Act of Valor (probably the world's most expensive Navy recruiting film, but OK)

February
No movies. Just work & TV. Sad!

January
The Ides of March (pretty people are evil; no, seriously--ambition is the devil)
+ The Artist
*+ TinTin (took my sister out for her birthday; held up well to 2nd viewing)
The Secret Garden (1949, Margaret O'Brien & Dean Stockwell!)
Red Riding Hood (pretty; hope they paid Gary Oldman a bundle to chew scenery)
Super 8
+ Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy (in the bleak midwinter...)
+ We Bought a Zoo ("Why not?" especially when I had a free ticket thanks to all those movies I saw in December. Starting on a positive note this year.)

I've been using the website Letterboxd to journal the films I've recently watched. It's probably easier just to link there than to cut and paste everything.

Film diary.

I usually don't come across this thread until a month into the new year, by which time I've forgotten most of what I've watched in January. However, since I've caught it so uniquely early this year, I guess I'll start my list.

+ = Theatre Viewing (89 total)
* = Repeat Viewing (56 total)
Click on title for IMDb page link.
Click on year and director for A&F page link.

Recap of 2012 - 143 films watched (nearly 100 by the end of June, then a dramatic drop off). Only 23 films from 2012. 89 films seen in theatres. 56 repeat viewings (theatre and TV). 87 first time exposures.

END OF YEAR REVIEW:

In 2012, I watched 168 films. 114 of those films were new films (i.e. films I hadn't seen before). That's about 68%.

About 34% (57/168) of the films I saw were in the theater.

I gave 17 films I saw this year 5.0/5. This comes out to 10%, but the number is significantly inflated because nearly all of the movies I rewatched in 2012 were films I gave 5.0/5 to.
