I just read a new book, "Making the White Man's Indian: Native Americans and Hollywood Movies," by Greenwood Publishing. The author looks behind the scenes and talks about how and why the filmmakers created the Native Americans' screen image. The book covers 100 years and includes directors' interviews and lots of "inside" studio material and unique photos. I liked it because it was easy to read and gave a perspective different than the usual "Hollywood always creates negative stereotypes." This book says there are many, many Westerns with positive portrayals that were overlooked. Good info on classic and contemporary Westerns, too. Highly Recommended.
