In an update on Lars, it looks like the Dane has dropped his Antichrist plans, but now intends to film a documentary on Dreyer's Gertrud.

Anyone want to speculate about what's intriguing him about the project?

Here's the link.

Perhaps the ghost of Dreyer, the one that Von Trier has previously claimed to channel, has asked him to help us to better understand the most boring film in Dreyer's oeuvre?

Yeah, Von Trier has never been shy about his love for Dreyer. Some of his movies are already practically commentaries on Dreyer's films. This should be interesting though, I think Gertrud is pretty underrated and deserves all the attention it can get. It wasn't at all boring to me, but I guess I understand how some people could feel that way.

This is fascinating news.

Von Trier's decision to go forward with this project is obvious: he loves depiction of strong, independent females. Gertrud is one, right? (My memory is a bit fuzzy.)

This makes me want to watch Gertrud again.

You wll go straight to hell for your comments on Gertrud, Stef. It is an unassailable masterpiece of the art form.

I'm going to have my first viewing of Gertrud pretty soon. Russ, have you watched this yet? If not, we should try to watch it around the same time and then compare notes.

Sorry, Russ, but I don't actually have the disc yet. Should be soon, though. Please don't feel like you need to wait for me.

Yeah, I haven't watched it in the, what, three or so years since I've had the box. If I don't watch it tonight, IT'S YOUR FAULT!

Those who never get the chance to see Gertrud are not condemned to eternal punishment, only those who see it and reject it.

Then, for crying out loud, why isn't GERTRUD ranked #1 on Spiritually Significant Films list?! These consequences sound extremely significant to me! eek.gif

LOL!

I have GOT to meet the Pastor of that church. OK, with that guy, I would sit thru Gertrud again.

I think more than the fact that it bored me is the fact that Gertrud herself made me pretty aggrivated. But that may have been the point. And it shuold be pointed out that Dreyer's least greatest picture is still better than many other directors' greatest.

That is hilarious, Diane.

And I should point out that on a personal level, I consider Dreyer's compassionate critique of idealism/perfectionism to be deeply evocative. One's mileage will vary.

Edit: Nice sig, Stef!

Thanks for bumping, Mike. I laughed and laughed loud. Gertrud and I are currently walking hand-in-hand away from hell.
