The Boss! His Seegar Sessions are wonderful.

A live dog or a dead lion? (Careful! You may be going against scripture)

Well, I tend to think life is usually better than death, so I'll go with the live dog, I think. (Do I get promoted to the next Sunday school class, Pastor Manson?)

Tea or Sympathy?

Well, at least you agree with the writer who may be the most cynical in the Bible.

I like a nice Earl Grey, but sympathy can often warm me far better.

Giving or receiving? (Never mind what the Bible says, what do you think?)

Receiving. (Over the Rhine: "There's nothing harder than learning how to receive.")

Widescreen VHS or fullscreen DVD?

Journey. More melody, less machismo.

Journey, Journey to the Center of the Earth, The Journey of Natty Gann, The Incredible Journey, Gillian Welch's Soul Journey, or The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo?

Have to jump in on this real quick. Edward Tulane is fantastic, moving gripping stuff. God love DiCamillo (a friend of a friend btw).

Answer PTC's question:

Widescreen VHS - especially if it's a Lynch film since the man doesn't believe in CHAPTERS!!!

White cake or Yellow cake (assuming that chocolate frosting is a given)?

Agreed about Tulane. DiCamillo is quickly establishing herself as one of the great childrens' novelists of all time. The Tiger Rising is so beautiful, so powerful. The Tale of Despereaux is great fairy tale telling. And Tulane just takes your heart and smashes it again and again... in the best ways.

Now, back to the cake.

The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance or The Man Who Was Thursday?
(Man, I should have saved that one for a blog battle)

Maybe not! since it's been three days and no one has ventured an opinion on this one.

I say: The Man Who Was Thursday

Oh yeah:

M.Night Shyamalan or a night in a swimming pool

John Stott. Definitely.

Okay, since we're on page five, it may be a good time to brush up on the rules. It's a simple game, really,

In your message, you pair two things. They don't have to be movies, they can be objects, books, appliances, experiences, you name it. The next person replies by answering which is better, explaining (optional), and pairing two more objects, experiences, artworks, etc.

The Replacements or The Replacement Killers?

Oops, well, here's my previously-left-out pair:

Francois Mauriac or Walker Percy

If you trust the Tomatometer, Firewall (18%). (Firewalker is one of those magical films that not a single critic has stood up for. OTOH, the statistical sampling of only six critics, compared to 143 for Firewall, pretty much shreds any rigorous comparison of the results.)

Reign of Fire. Kickass dragons and the one great performance by Matthew McConaughey... and a very strange reenactment of the Star Wars saga for a group of wide-eyed children. It's decent fantasy escapism in a Waterworld kinda way.

Jennifer Garner as the lead in Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman
or Gina Torres as the lead in Joss Whedon's Wonder Woman?

Gina Torres, Gina Torres, Gina Torres ("what I tell you three times is true," as the Bellman says in "The Hunting of the Snark" wink.gif

But really, I suspect it will be someone completely different.

I'll go with Torres -- already seen Garner do all that stuff the last few years on Alias.

Let's see... if you mean the 41st President vs. the 43rd President, I'd have to go with 41, because he committed fewer acts and said fewer things that made me want to throw myself off a bridge.

But when it comes to which one of them inspired more memorable caricatures... I'll take Will Ferrell's Bush 43 over Dana Carvey's Bush 41.

Who's a better film critic?

A.O. Scott
David Edelstein
J.R. Jones
Andrew O'Heihr
Charles Taylor
or
Stephanie Zacharek?

Answer to your question: Edelstein, just barely.

Salon...on the strength of Stephanie Zacharek's and Andrew O'Hehir's writing.

Salon or Flowbee?

Depends on who is singing...but, I'll say organ music in church.

Beach vacation or mountain vacation?

Actually in Juy 2006 MCI was known as Verizon Business.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Merry Christmas sounds so much more pleasant and sincere. Happy Holidays seems loaded with political correctness and no heart.
