Breaking The Waves (1996)

Lars von Trier went back on his Dogme95 manifesto to provide the perfect balance to wrestling over whether God is a God of fire and brimstone or a God of grace. It striking scenery doesn't detract from the tragedy which is brought home by its superb performances and intimate camerawork. Hard to watch but incredibly rewarding for those with eyes to see.

Note: The film contains graphic sexual images.
