Recommended Posts

Here is the list of nominations following the submission of Top 25 lists from 23 people. I'll also attach it as a spreadsheet for anyone who wants to sort through the list, make notes, etc. I've gone through it a few times to eliminate duplicates, but leave a comment here if you spot one.

WOW. Thanks Darren, for your coordination of this part of the list-making process. It'll take me some time to personally process what's here (and what's missing), but my initial reaction is overwhelmingly positive. So many great films I'd hoped to nominate myself but didn't are here, as are so many films I'm now thinking, "yeah, of course!" as well as a few I've not seen or heard of before (and a few which honestly have elicited a "huh?" reaction). Lots to consider here.

There are also a few I had to look up because the offical IMDb title is different from what we commonly use. For example, when I saw Summer (1986), I assumed it was a Rohmer film but I couldn't remember which one. It's actually Le Rayon Vert or The Green Ray. And I'm so glad someone nominated it!

Yes, thank you so much, Darren.  This whole process so far - from watching beaucoup films to the thoughtful discussion here - has been an utter delight.  I was tempted to call it a distraction from the pandemic, but distraction minimizes what we're doing.  It's been a celebration of what is good in life and art in the midst of death and fear.

To be an artist is never to avert one's eyes.

If anyone with more time than I would like to sift the spreadshett, I'd be interested in final tallies regarding:

--Decades.

--Male/Female.

--Documentary/Narrative

--Nationality (though I realize that's problematic...talking about director/subject/production).

Incidentally, a quick eye-ball finger count shows 63 films dated 2011 or after. I realize that's arbitrary since there was some sort of rule for 2011 that a film couldn't have been released in last 3 years or something, but it does give me a sense of which films were eligible for the first time. That's frankly less than I thought it would be as a percentage of total nominees, suggesting I may not have been the only one that divided my list of nominees into three categories: 1) stuff it's essential we keep; 2) newly eligible films; and 3) previously omitted stuff that warrants reconsideration.

I confess that category #3 interests me the most.

Notable omission -- I just realized nobody nominated The Straight Story.

I say that is notable because I was equally surprised when it was #1 in 2019 Top 25 on "Growing Older" and told that it had been on just about every A&F Top 100 and many of the Top 25 lists.

I considered it briefly, but felt sure someone else would, and more importantly, if we're limiting to two films per director, I'm going with Fire Walk With Me and Mulholland Drive before I pick The Straight Story. For the record, I did nominate Fire Walk With Me.

FWIW, a very quick check of 2011 list shows the following films not nominated (in order)...I was quick so I may have mistyped one or two search terms on the spreadsheet:

  • 10 Babette's Feast
  • 32 Apu Trilogy (I searched the first one but not all three titles)
  • 34 NIghts of Cabiria
  • 38 The Straight Story
  • 39 Touch of Evil
  • 41 4 Months, 3 Weeks, 2 Days
  • 44 Black Narcissus
  • 46 The Child (was this the only Dardenne we didn't nominate?)
  • 48 Yi Yi
  • 51 Stroszek
  • 57 Eureka
  • 62 Rashomon
  • 65 Becket
  • 70 Lawrence of Arabia (and PTC's absence is felt, I suspect)
  • 71 Koyaansquatsi
  • 75 The Return
  • 80 Paprika
  • 81 Floating Weeds
  • 82 Born into Brothels
  • 84 Syndromes and a Century
  • 87 The Trial
  • 89 Sullivan's Travels
  • 91 Dogville
  • 92 Spirit of the Beehive
  • 94 Early Summer (Wasn't this in the Top 10 in 2010 list? -- that's a pretty surprising plummet)
  • 98 Ratcatcher
  • 100 The Story of Weeping Camel

Babette's Feast and Sullivan's Travels were both nominated. Not sure about all the others.

And did we really lose Dogville? Woohoo!

We nominated The Promise, The Son, The Kid with a Bike, Two Days, One Night, and The Unknown Girl. Which means we didn't nominate Rosetta (!), The Child, Lorna's Silence, and Young Ahmed.

The lack of Black Narcissus is felt, but instead of the latter, I nominated The Red Shoes, a film which AFAIK has not been on one of the Top 100 lists.

I thought I nominated Black Narcissus. I made a couple last-second adjustments to a file I had made last year right after the top 25. Apparently, I replaced Black Narcissus at the last second without updating the document. That is a disappointment, but with so many other great movies to choose from and to discover, the disappointment shouldn't last long. Joel, I agree that The Red Shoes would be a great replacement to keep Powell & Pressburger represented if it ends up making the top 100.

It's a beautiful list. Thanks, Darren and Joel and Ken and everybody!

Note: This may have been a typo I made that somehow made its way to the list above, but I notice on The Fits there's an erroneous character in place of the first parentheses.

P.S.  I COULD BE WRONG.

I understand the IMDB naming convention, but the abbreviated title of #295 is something I’d been completely unaware of. When you type the first two words of the title into the IMDB search box, the full title of the film drops in, but when you click on that title, it takes you to the listing page - with the shortened title. Sigh. I’ll live - I guess.

I'll just mention a couple that I considered and hoped might get nominated that had generated some good conversation during Top 25 and Film Club discussions in the past couple years: The Ninth Configuration and Joe Versus the Volcano. I'd have voted for them over The Exorcist and Doubt, which are nominated. Not that this master list doesn't contain way more than 100 worthy films.

I see a few on there from my nomination list. I hope you enjoy watching them!
