John 3:4,7-8 - A Man Escaped (1956) - quoted

Pastor: Don't blame yourself. You couldn't have stopped him. He couldn't wait anymore.

Fontaine: Why? Out of hopelessness?

Pastor: Too much hope for a new life.

F: A new life?

P: Maybe that is what Christ meant. "Ye must be born again..." I wrote it down for you. His words to Nicodemus.

(Next scene, Fontaine at cell window, reading to neighbour:)

F: Nicodemus said: How can a man be born again when he is old? Can he enter his mother's womb and be born? Jesus said: Marvel not that I said ye must be born again. The wind bloweth where it listeth. Thou knowest not whence it cometh...

(The subtitle of the film is "Le vent souggle ou il veut," which is "The wind blows as it listeth")

Referenced, but not cited directly - a reach...

Matthew 6:12 - The Merchant Of Venice (1994) - reference

Portia's famous speech references the Lord's Prayer;

"The quality of mercy is not strain'd,

It droppeth as the gentle rain from heaven

Upon the place beneath: it is twice blest;

It blesseth him that gives and him that takes:

'Tis mightiest in the mightiest: it becomes

The throned monarch better than his crown;

His sceptre shows the force of temporal power,

The attribute to awe and majesty,

Wherein doth sit the dread and fear of kings;

But mercy is above this sceptred sway;

It is enthroned in the hearts of kings,

It is an attribute to God himself;

And earthly power doth then show likest God's

When mercy seasons justice. Therefore, Jew,

Though justice be thy plea, consider this,

That, in the course of justice, none of us

Should see salvation: we do pray for mercy;

And that same prayer doth teach us all to render

The deeds of mercy. I have spoke thus much

To mitigate the justice of thy plea;

Which if thou follow, this strict court of Venice

Must needs give sentence 'gainst the merchant there.

As per my earlier post, "whichever verse it is that talks about working out your salvation in fear and trembling, if memory serves."

Since Ron mentioned Pale Rider, there are a couple of quotes in the film: Ps. 23 and Rev. 6:7-8

Darrel,

Does either quote include the reference (chapter and verse)?

"Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts?"

« Nous connaîtrions-nous seulement un peu nous-mêmes, sans les arts? »

Quoted on Canada's $20 bill; from Gabrielle Roy's novel La montagne secrète. The English translation, The Hidden Mountain, is by Harry L. Binsse.

BibleGateway.com pops up with three references from the KJV:

Acts 10:42

And he commanded us to preach unto the people, and to testify that it is he which was ordained of God to be the Judge of quick and dead...

2 Timothy 4:1

I charge thee therefore before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, who shall judge the quick and the dead at his appearing and his kingdom;

1 Peter 4:5

Who shall give account to him that is ready to judge the quick and the dead.

I don't think so.

Genesis 3:20 - Flaming Star (1960) - quoted

Sam 'Pa' Burton: [at Neddy Burton's funeral] One thing from the bible she liked. "And Adam called his wife's name Eve, because she was the mother of all living." To me, Neddy, you were the mother of all living. You were life itself. God... just one thing... take care of this woman. Amen.
