Persuasion opens with Sir Walter expressing disdain for those in the military who, he believes, have been aged prematurely by their experiences. It climaxes with a pair of lovers walking against the flowing of traffic, literally and figuratively leaving the parade of life behind. It concludes with the couple sailing off into the horizon. Many of Jane Austen’s narratives are about the need of a heroine to grow wise before she can be happy. Anne Elliot is hardly elderly, but she fears that her chance to live and love may already be gone. As she comes into her own, she is revitalized physically and, yes, spiritually. She may have been aged prematurely by her own circumstances, but she is rejuvenated by her willingness to grow, change, and adapt.
