  1. I'm not sure if it is relevant other than she is simply trying to get on with her life and is embracing a part of her experience where she has had success and satisfaction. It sounds much healthier to me than sitting around wallowing in depression and inactivity.
  2. Sounds good. I'm interested in your experience since a number of my Windows-loving friends are looking for alternatives to the Dells, Toshibas, and HPs of the world... and they (for whatever reason) decided not to "go Mac".
  3. A coworker of mine saw a photo of me driving near our office on Google Maps Street View. (You have to manually select Street View.) I'm in the old white Toyota pickup. Has anyone else seen themselves on Google Maps?
  4. Sam Phillips sent out an e-mail to her mailing list this morning:
  5. I actually had the battery short-circuit in my first iPhone. It suddenly went dead and started getting hot. I called Apple and talked to their customer service people. They immediately gave me the "duck and cover" speech and then made an appointment for me at the local Apple Store. I drove over there about half an hour later and they popped open a new one and activated it for me in about 5 minutes. Nice!
  6. If you have a Mac, you can make your own ringtones in Garageband (using iTunes songs, or any other unprotected audio for that matter) for no charge. You can also create original music/sounds too.
  7. I don't pay extra for anything. In theory, if used more than my allowable minutes per month AND somehow used all of my rollover minutes (thousands of hours) or exceeded my text message limit (also unlikely) I would pay extra. The data plan was the only thing I added to my AT&T account when I purchased and activated the iPhone. The data plan is a flat rate "all you can eat" plan.
  8. I use it to sync with iCal (Macintosh calendaring) but I have no experience with using an iPhone with Outlook. One of my coworkers uses his with a Windows computer and an Outlook calendar, so I'm sure it can be done, but I have no idea how well it works. The mapping feature is great. You can type in an address (or do a search using key words) and the iPhone will find the location(s) on a map. Furthermore, it can give you directions (both in text and pictures) as well as give you contact information that you can tap and dial/e-mail. I use it all the time to locate restaurants and place takeout orders. It does not have true GPS. However, there is a location button (shaped like crosshairs) on the maps screen that estimates your location by triangulation from nearby cell towers. It is surprisingly accurate in most cases. Once you know your general location, it is very easy to figure out where you are based on street names or landmarks (when using the satellite view of the area). It won't completely take the place of a full-blown GPS unit, but it comes close. At this point, the iPhone is officially closed to outside developers. However, Steve Jobs is announcing the developers kit next week (along with some new "enterprise solutions") that should create a flurry of activity around the platform. I expect to see Bible software for the iPhone sometime in 2008. That's pretty much it. It is running a version of Mac OS X, so there are all sorts of opportunities to develop the platform.
  9. Still love mine. I use it primarily for e-mail, Web-browsing on-the-go, video, calendering, YouTube, weather data and forecasts, the mapping/direction features (quite a bit more than I expected), clock and alarms, and the calculator. Oh, I also use it to make and receive telephone calls. My brother came to visit between Christmas and New Year's and spent much of his time playing with my iPhone. A few weeks after he returned home, he bought one himself and is very pleased.
  10. It may not be obvious, but push the .?123 key, and then push the #+= key and you will have all the brackets you need. [[[]]] FYI, the message has been posted from my iPhone.
  11. After playing the Burnout Paradise demo for most of an evening, I preordered it from Amazon. It finally came in on Tuesday and I've been playing it at every opportunity. Great gameplay, a H U G E virtual world (I'm still discovering major streets on the map, not to mention all of the hidden roads, tunnels and unusual connections), and great effects. This is easily the best game I've played in years.

I kept getting an error message when I posted, so I tried a couple of times. I guess an extra one slipped through. I have terminated that unwanted post. There was some of that in our theater (both times I saw it), but most of the response came from the teen and adolescent kids. I hate going to see movies with teens, especially younger teens. Both times I saw this movie, I had to tell other audience members to stop talking and watch the movie. The first time I was even challenged by an older teen boy... I had to get up and have a talk with him before he quieted down.

I completely agree; the bulk of the theater (which was moderately filled with 20 - 30 couples) laughed and cheered. I felt so uncomfortable because I know that my friends and I were the only people that saw something wrong with the scene. I certainly understand why all of you are uncomfortable with the scene. But I think it belongs in the film because it rings true and is one of the two turning points with Juno's relationship to her stepmother.

    Format WAR!

Given that HD movie download file sizes will be anywhere from 15-25 GB each, do you really think that companies are going to do downloads anytime soon?

Maybe you need to refresh your browser page... I just double-checked and the ship date I see in 2/26/2008. I preordered her new CD on the day it listed (ship date 1/29/2008), and sometime in late December I received the notice that the shipping date had slipped to 2/26/2008.

Unless his wife posted it, I'm very skeptical of its authenticity... although it does sound like something he might say.

Maybe he has the rights structured in such a way that he only has rights to filmed or videotaped expressions of his work and characters. By the way, has anyone else had personal contact with Harlan Ellison? My experience (about a half-dozen years ago when I was a magazine editor) was rather interesting. He has a well-deserved reputation for being a controlling curmudgeon. At that time, he refused to use e-mail, voice mail or do much with the internet... We had a very difficult time working with him... so much so that the story was eventually killed because he refused to grant us permission to use any images of him with the biographical piece we commissioned.
  22. Sara and I ran out of room on our 3G 40GB iPods several years ago. Now Sara is sporting a new black 160GB iPod and she carries everything she wants... although she's starting to run out of room.
  23. Of course, since no other manufacturers use Seagate drives or have encountered problems with faulty components...right? Didn't the industry just go through a massive replacement of laptop batteries? Seagate has had a very good reputation for hard drives (which may now slip), so just how is this Apple's fault? Don't users have some responsibility to back up their data? Apple has a long and consistent history of customer service, so I'm sure they will take steps to repair/replace faulty drives.

Just heard a rumor from a fairly reliable source that the new album will be released February 8, 2008 (although that's a Friday, it might be the date of a release party). In any case, we can probably expect the album sometime in the first half of February. She has also renewed her contract with Nonesuch.
