Herzog gets shut out again.

BTW, Undefeated isn't the Sarah Palin documentary (that's *The* Undefeated). It's a Friday Night Lights-type football doc.

[Edit] No Errol Morris, either.

And much to my surprise, I actually got a screener of Undefeated last week, in a package that also included screeners of The Artist, My Week with Marilyn, Coriolanus and The Iron Lady. I can't recall if I've ever received a screener of a DOCUMENTARY during awards season before (not counting Canadian films, a category that tends to be rather thick with non-fiction films).

I have no idea how relevant this will be, but the Writers Guild of America has announced its nominees for "Documentary Screenplay":

  • Better This World, Written by Katie Galloway & Kelly Duane de la Vega; Loteria Films
  • If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front, Written by Marshall Curry and Matthew Hamachek; Oscilloscope Pictures
  • Nostalgia for the Light, Written by Patricio Guzmán; Icarus Films
  • Pina, Screenplay by Wim Wenders; Sundance Selects
  • Position Among the Stars, Script by Hetty Naaijkens-Retel Helmrich, Leonard Retel Helmrich; HBO Documentary Films
  • Senna, Written by Manish Pandey; Producers Distribution Agency

The winner will be announced February 19, or one week before the Oscars.

I haven't read the article, but that seems pretty stupid to me.

Michael Moore is taking credit for the new rules, and his reasoning seems sound, to me. For one thing, I had no idea that the award, until now, was voted on by only 5% of the Academy (i.e. the documentary branch). I thought the documentary branch played a part in NOMINATING the documentaries but left the final vote to the entire Academy membership.

So, the various guild nominations so far shake down like so (with the guild-award nominees who are also on the Academy's short list are in bold):

  • 2 nominations

  • Bill Cunningham New York -- PGA, DGA
  • Project Nim -- PGA, DGA
  • Senna -- PGA, WGA

    1 nomination

  • Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of A Tribe Called Quest -- PGA
  • Better This World -- WGA
  • George Harrison: Living in the Material World -- DGA
  • If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front -- WGA
  • The Interrupters -- DGA
  • Nostalgia for the Light -- WGA
  • Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory -- DGA
  • Pina -- WGA
  • Position Among the Stars -- WGA
  • The Union -- PGA

I have no idea if this is indicative of anything, but there you go.

And the winner is... Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest, a film that didn't even make the Oscar shortlist.

Vote!

And, wow, there isn't any overlap between the Academy's nominees and the Producers Guild's nominees at ALL. The only guild-nominated films to make the Academy's list are If a Tree Falls: A Story of the Earth Liberation Front (WGA), Paradise Lost 3: Purgatory (DGA) and Pina (WGA).

I've seen two. Wasn't all that impressed with If a Tree Falls.
