My wife and I just finished this last night. Excellent! I'd love to see a film version. (Oh, look! IMDB shows Jonathan Demme has it in preproduction, but no cast associated with it yet.)

I loved the way it treated Islam (especially Kathy's conversion and her family's total misunderstanding). I loved the way the characters were fleshed out. About the time Zeitoun is arrested and Kathy hears nothing from him for about 2 weeks while in Camp Greyhound and prison the book takes a much more serious trajectory than it had up to that point while he wanders NOLA in his canoe helping people. A look at a system that was seriously broken (as they are in any major catastrophe, but it just seems worse in this story).

A foreign movie can't be stupid.
