I've seen this before. What do you think?

I have something called covenanteyes. It's very effective. They log all your activity and once every two weeks they email it to whoever your accountability partner is. My internet activity goes to my pastor and my best friend.

I've heard many people who have had problems with filters because it doesn't always know what to block and sometimes blocks unnecessary sites.

This program works as a tracker, not a filter, and it's only about $7.00 a month. I highly reccomend it. covenanteyes.com

I use public computers sooooo this helps A LOT. I'd be too tempted if I didn't. Feels good to not have to deal with it though.

Well, it certainly makes a change from the usual internet fare.

I have to say I kind of appreciate that it's dealing with it as an issue of personal responsibility and not simply lambasting porn.

As for myself, I deal with porn on the internet in a similar way to when I get a chocolate craving. If you ignore it and get on with something else, soon enough you won't be thinking about it anymore. Now I want chocolate. Darn.

I think when I originally saw this post, and followed the link there was something against masturbation. I thought that was taking things a bit far, personally. Can't seem to find it this time, so not 100% sure it was the same site.

I was at the website over the last few days. It's good to see that they are not beating around the bush on this issue. Porn is sooo in your face that I don't have a problem with the fighting fire with fire kinda thing. I think though, for most people it is not simply ignoring and doing something else but rather accountability that will have a big impact.

How about this one? Save the Kittens

It ain't as simple as ignoring and doing something else, it's making the choice to not let that impulse dominate my actions so yes ignoring it is equivalent to accountability. I also have a much stronger stance, which is probably equivalent to the not buying chocolate that isn't fair trade - it harms people down the line and I feel it's dangerous to detach yourself from that. However, the way it works for me practically on a day to day basis is "to ignore it and get on with something else."

And yeah... you might wanna rephrase the "porn is in your face" statement. Well, it at least made me laugh out loud.

As for save the kittens. Well that's just daft. And it takes on a different meaning in the UK as "puppies" and "kittens" are bywords for male and female anatomical parts. I personally would feel far more stupid saying "every time I have a kitten" than "every time I masturbate." It's funny cos the rest of their website is about de-mystifying sex and pornography to tackle it on a real basis.

As for the approach that "masturbation is wrong," it's just far too prescriptive for my particular liking. And I really don't appreciate the idea that anyone who isn't anti-masturbation isn't "a normal thinker" and an abstract intellectual who doesn't deal with moral issues on a real basis.

so good to see this post.

I'm a middle school Bible teacher at a Christian School. A few weeks ago a note was found which was written by two guys who were joking about some sex "ideas." Teachers and Administrators were shocked an appalled. Unfortunately the action take was to have stricter snack time and give blue slips (i.e. slap on the wrist).

I was very frustrated and as the school was recupperating from their loss of innocence I tried to express my ideas that this is a coming of age time for the boys and these notes represent a type of rights of passage. I would be very, very interested in knowing your thoughts regarding this concept.

Anyways, as the parents were coming to grips on what to do I told one mom about the 3x website. Her interest was high and seemed to be exceedingly grateful for the information. She shared that it was difficult for her to even go get groceries because she knew her son would be on the internet as soon as she left. So it seems as though even if the views of anti-masterbation are seen as extreme by some. . .the website is allowing some moms to go grocery shopping with a bit more peace of mind.

What I would like to ask however, is what resources are out there similar to this? There are the books "Every young man's battle" and encouraging accountability and etc. But what can a female Bible teacher do to try to address this "problem" for jr. highers besides having them read a book and talk to a youth pastor? How can we get beyond the surface and down to the deeper spiritual issues? Any ideas?

I don't think the views on masturbation are extreme, I just don't think that it's realistic or dealing with (no pun intended) the problem in hand. Personally, I only see masturbation as a problem when it's "serial" masturbation, and even then it's pretty normal at a certain age. Most people grow out of it, they learn with time and experience what is right for them. And that, I think is important - what's right for these guys isn't necesarily right for others and that's what I have the problem with: the naming of masturbation as "wrong." For the vast majority of people, it's a perfectly normal way of being in tune with your body. I personally find it sad that they see it asone extreme or the other - 100% egocentric pleasure or nothing at all. It's much more complicated than either of those positions allow but I think the only way you can come to understand that is by having the freedom to discover it for yourself.

As for the mom -- I think some sort of improved internet security, or perhaps disconnecting the internet from her home, putting a password on the computer might allow her to go stock up on the fridge. Will probably deliver a stronger message to her son who will not, I'm pretty sure, actually look at this website and will probably laugh at the idea of "killing kitties." We are talking teenagers who really, for the vast majority of cases, have little to no respect for advice given on these issues.

As for what can a female bible teacher do? well, try talking about it without using euphemisms for one. Our school sex education class consisted of a video of naked people playing volleyball on the beach. The class laughed so much that our teacher yelled at us for half an hour. We learnt tons that day - mainly that adults know as little as we do sometimes. The only person that actually talked to us with any level of respect about sex (the biological, phsychological, and moral aspects) was our RE teacher and you know what - we actually talked back to him cos he was approaching us on a non-judgemental level AND we knew we could trust him to not go running to our parents. I think you're right that the school's approach was a little harsh. It's those kind of things that distance kids further and lead to them passing notes and secretly checking out porn instead of discussing things.

Just noticed this. Are you sure the pun WASN'T intended? It suppose to be "...the problem **AT** hand." gigi, you dawg you.

I heard recently that the XXXChurch people are filming a reality show with VH1. This from Rob Bell, the Michigan uber-pastor who premiered MP in his church (5,000 attended).

"Could we ever know each other in the slightest without the arts?"

« Nous connaîtrions-nous seulement un peu nous-mêmes, sans les arts? »

Quoted on Canada's $20 bill; from Gabrielle Roy's novel La montagne secrète. The English translation, The Hidden Mountain, is by Harry L. Binsse.
