He starred in the first feature-length Stanley Kubrick film (1953's Fear and Desire), he directed the first R-rated movie released by the Disney company (1986's Down and Out in Beverly Hills), and he was one of the few directors to direct Woody Allen in a film that Woody Allen did not write (1991's Scenes from a Mall). That's what *I* remember him for, at least.
