U.S. Poet Laureate

Recommended Posts

I loved Charles Wright’s response to being named the 2014-15 Poet Laureate of the United States: “I’m very honored and flattered to be picked, but also somewhat confused. I really don’t know what I’m supposed to do. But as soon as I find out, I’ll do it.”

Gentle self-effacing humor is typical of Wright’s poetic style. It was his teaching style as well….I studied with many fine poets at the Warren Wilson MFA program, but it was taking Charles Wright’s course that  pulled it all together (not that I got very far).

Wright has published 24 books of poetry, most recently Caribou, and won the Pulitzer Prize in 1998 for Black Zodiac. His work is described as meditative, image driven. I would add, Christ-haunted. He writes about language, landscape, and the idea of God….“All poetry is written from an exiled point of view.”
