Apparently a conflict is brewing because the Academy considers Whiplash an "adapted" script, and the Writers Guild considers it an "original" script.

At issue here is the fact that Whiplash was written as a feature, but then one sequence was produced as a short film, to give financiers a sense of what the completed film would be like -- and the Academy regards the feature film as an *adaptation* of that short film. Apparently, a few years ago, the Academy considered Frozen River to be an "original" screenplay even though it went through a similar process. (The Deadline article also mentions Sling Blade, but I can't recall if the full feature script had already been written before the short film was produced, or if the entire feature film was a later extrapolation from that short film.)

District 9 was nominated for the Adapted Screenplay Oscar in 2010, because it was based on the short, "Alive in Joburg." I'm not sure if it had the same intended-to-be-a-feature process, though.

Vote!

And note: American Sniper and The Imitation Game are the only overlaps with the WGA, though Whiplash was nominated in the "original" category by the WGA.
