And then there were ten:

  • “Deepwater Horizon”
  • “Doctor Strange”
  • “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them”

The nominees for the Oscar are (with the ones I've seen in bold):

  • Deepwater Horizon
  • Doctor Strange
  • The Jungle Book
  • Kubo and the Two Strings
  • Rogue One: A Star Wars Story

So, four of the top five VES award nominees, plus Kubo and the Two Strings. (Basically all of the films that got multiple VES nominations except for Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, with Kubo taking that film's place.)

I forgot to mention that the Annie Awards have two awards for live-action films, i.e. awards that are basically equivalent to the Oscars' visual-effects awards. Tonight the winners were announced, and they were The Jungle Book for Character Animation and Doctor Strange (specifically, the Mirror Dimension sequence(s)) for Animated Effects.

And the winners are...

  • 5 awards for The Jungle Book (Visual Effects, Animated Performance, Effects Simulations, Virtual Cinematography, Compositing)
  • 2 awards for Deepwater Horizon (Model, Supporting Visual Effects)
  • 1 award for Doctor Strange (Created Environment)

Interestingly, Rogue One had the most nominations -- seven -- but won absolutely nothing, while Deepwater Horizon had only two nominations and won them both.
