Great commercials by great directors.

When Michel Gondry, Spike Jonze, and Errol Morris and others aren't making full-length films, they're often slumming in the world of television commercials -- usually with very positive results.

A few of my favorites:

Errol Morris for PBS.

Errol Morris for United Airlines.

Michel Gondry for Air France.

Michel Gondry for Gap.

Can I cheat and throw in these commericals for Spam Singles (click on "Spam Singles"), even though the director(s) probably aren't "great?"

Adding: And I must say that United Airlines spot surprised me a little — better than I thought it might be.

Spike Jonze for Adidas

Jonathan Glazer for

I'm not sure, but I think Jonathan Glazer did this one for Levi's, too.

No way! In the Michel Gondry "Air France" commercial, about 10 seconds in, the actress who blows a kiss to the kid on the playground is my lead actress from my graduate thesis film! I had heard her say that she did a quick shot for a Michel Gondry commercial, and while she didn't seem quite as impressed by that as I was, she did say that it took a full day to get that one shot...

"You guys don't really know who you're dealing with."

"Oh yeah, and who exactly are we dealing with?"

"I'm the mother flippin' rhymenoceros."

More in the category of short film than commercial, but here is David Lynch's latest offering for a Dior handbag.

David Lynch - "They called me up and said, ‘Would you like to make a short film for the internet? You can do anything you want, you just need to show the handbag, the Pearl Tower and some old Shanghai.’”

That commercial is an abomination.

I admired Hillcoat's The Proposition.

And I thought The Road was an admirable, if not entirely successful, attempt to bring the novel to the screen.

But this... good lord. The music is the same Wagner piece that runs through much of Malick's The New World. The voiceover is patterned so closely to Q'orianka Kilcher's v/o in The New World that it's incredible. The imagery is very much a Malick style, but rips off David Gordon Green's George Washington almost as directly as The New World.

And it does this for Levi's.

If you're going to steal blatantly from the masters, at least do it for a cause worthy of that greatness. But this? Overpriced jeans?

I object.

I won't be surprised if his next commercial rips of Johnny Greenwood from There Will Be Blood, and a Day-Lewis clone is crawling through a desert in blue jeans at dusk.

Y'know, the instant I realized how tight the connection to The New World was, I thought of you and wondered how you'd respond. I can't say I disagree with you (although I can't match the vigor of your response).

Historically, one of the greatest commercials of all time was shot by a great motion picture director: Ridley Scott...

In case you were wondering, my name is spelled "Denes House," but it's pronounced "Throatwobbler Mangrove."

Technically, co-directed by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola, actually:

As long as we're talking Wes Anderson, here's a youtube playlist that has several of his commercials. My personal favorite is his American Express ad("FRANCOIS!!!!")

Or how about Michael Bay's distinctive but, considering his current work, rather restrained Got Milk ads. Lots of quick cuts and dolly shots, but nary an explosion in sight:
