Canadians have been burning up the phone lines with votes for one of these attractive 16-year olds:

Tonight the second Canadian Idol will be announced. Theresa Sokyrka and Kalan Porter are both very gifted performers, but Kalan is expected to win it going away (likely based just on looks). Last night was the only episode I've seen, but each performer was pretty solid.

Kalan is a Christian, and his first song last night was a cover of Mercy Me's I Can Only Imagine. It brought a highly derisive reaction from the Simon Cowell-wannabe judge, Jake Gold ("I'm not knocking anybody's faith here, but c'mon, this is the Canadian Idol final!!") It was a pretty gutsy musical pick from a kid on the biggest night of his life, and he did a good job with it. (Kalan, the baby-faced angel that he is, followed that up with Born to be Wild, BTW.)

Our closer neighbors may be able to pick up the TV signal from across the border, if you care...

Hm. I just got finished arranging/performing a cover of Amy Grant's version of "Mercy Me" in Greece with a 14-year-old vocalist who apparently had never sung to anything but a background tape before...

But once she understood that we couldn't sound just like a tape we'd never heard, she was a real trooper. Turned out pretty good.

He's fictional, but you can't have everything.

Him too, huh? I haven't been following this at all, but I do know that one of the other contestants, Shane Wiebe, is a Christian too.

Y'know, I guess I am relaying that as third-hand info. When he sang I Can Only Imagine, my wife recalled hearing that he attends the church pastored by an acquaintance. Sorry, should have qualified that... but it appears to be true.

Oh my. Listen and watch at your own risk. Painful.
