For as long as I have identified as Christian, those who write about Christianity and the arts or those who make “Christian” art have described the crossover artist as the goal of Christian art. That artist would be someone who identified as Christian and whose art was accepted as Christian but which was adored and respected by the secular community as much as the faith community. Such a crossover would, ostensibly, put to bed the lie that Christian music, literature, or media was “six months later and half as good.”
It was not until I grew older and began studying art as a vocation that I came to understand how problematic these labels are. But great art is seldom written to a thesis, and part of what makes Amazing Grace so successful is that it allows the music and performance to sing for itself rather than speaking over it to explain its relevance — Kenneth R.
