If a man lives long enough, growing older will mean that he has to reckon with the impermanence of what seemed fixed in his youth meeting with the inevitable recurrence of those things he thought he had put behind him. The Archers’ elegiac epic chronicles the life of British army officer Clive Wynne-Candy through forty years and three wars. As an elderly man, he reflects on the code of life that sustained his love, his career, and most vitally, his friendship with a German officer, but he must also confront the new standards of honor in the generation that will succeed him. Candy finds that the foolishness of youth in time becomes the experience of the aged, and so perhaps is not its enemy, but its necessary complement. – Joshua Wilson
