Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret.

Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. is essential viewing because an unexamined faith is not a wellspring of beliefs, but a list on inclinations inscribed on a wet napkin. Following Abby Ryder Fortson (Ant-Man; A Dog’s Journey) as Margaret, the daughter of a Jewish man (Bennie Sadie — Oppenheimer; The Book of Boba Fett) and a Christian woman (Rachel McAdams — Mean Girls, The Notebook) shunned by her family. The film takes us along with Margaret as she asks questions about growing up, such as if God exists, when will she get her period, and how can people claim to be vessels of God’s love if they can’t even be brave enough to love their own family without conditions? In a just world, Rachel McAdams’ performance here would be challenging Lilly Gladstone (Killers of the Flower Moon) for Best Actress.  — Andrew J. Eisenman (2023)
